SAM VOGEL | VP, & CFO
Sam grew up in Johannesburg, South Africa and spent the first 10 years of his career within the South African financial markets. After finishing his Bachelor of Commerce at the University of the Witwatersrand (“The Harvard of South Africa”), he was one of the first dozen pioneer traders within the local derivatives markets. He started his trading and brokering career within commodity derivatives – specifically precious metals and soft commodities. He ended up running the equity derivatives divisions for major South African banks, including Nedbank and Finansbank.
During a sabbatical, Sam visited and traveled North America extensively and decided to make his life in the United States, eventually settling here in Houston, Texas. Sam qualified as a stockbroker and held his Series 7, 63 and 4 licenses, specializing in Equity Derivative strategies for clients. He eventually grew the business to the point of heading the buyout of a large independent stockbroker based in the Houston area.
Seeing opportunity within the energy markets, Sam pivoted to institutional energy derivatives brokering, first with Amerex and then with OTC Global Holdings, two of the leading US commodity organizations as recognized by Risk Magazine. Sam eventually entered the hedge fund fraternity and was instrumental in founding the Texas Hedge Fund Association, where he served as the inaugural Executive Director. Upon returning to energy derivatives brokering Sam served as Branch Manager (Series 3 and 30) and headed the Introducing Broker Division. Additionally, he headed the EOXLive Trading platform as Vice President, once again with OTC Global Holdings.
Sam’s wealth of experience within the financial markets, including energy, commodities, equities, and derivatives, provides Bellatorum a unique perspective within the energy sector. He also has a formidable contact base amongst fund managers, hedge funds, commodity traders and both institutional and ultra high net worth (UHNW) investors, also adding value to Bellatorum’s business development endeavors.
Sam is an avid sailor, having sailed the Indian Ocean for 7 months as a young man and skippering his own boat in the Caribbean for a year in 2010. He also enjoys playing golf most weekends, having once played off a scratch, but currently battles off a 5 handicap. His latest passion is spear-fishing off oil rigs in the Gulf of Mexico. Sam became a US citizen in November of 2015. Sam and his wife Lisa are happily married and enjoy spending time with their two young sons.
