Jonas E. Harrell  |  Chief Geologist

Jonas serves as the technical leader of the evaluation team, providing insight into the geologic risk/reward proposition based on his extensive experience in the unconventional basins of Texas and beyond.  He will also draw on his Operations, Business Development and Asset Evaluation experience to guide the evaluation metrics of well performance and economic considerations that are critical to understanding asset ranking from an E&P Operators perspective.

Jonas grew up in east Texas and enlisted in the Army Reserve during his Junior year of High School.  Jonas served in the Army Reserve and Texas Army National Guard as a truck driver, light wheel mechanic, and eventually a Bradly Fighting Vehicle mechanic.  Upon contracting with the Army ROTC Program at Texas A&M – Kingsville, Jonas served as an Infantry Platoon Leader in his National Guard unit.  Jonas was a Distinguished Graduate of the Sabalauski Air Assault School at Ft. Prior to joining Bellatorum, Jonas was a Geological Advisor in the Asset Development Team at Scala Energy, an EnCap backed E&P Operator.  Jonas planned and drilled numerous exploration, delineation, and development wells in the Wolfcamp Formation over the past three years.  Jonas joined Scala as a Sr. Geologist in the Business Development Team, responsible for asset evaluations across numerous unconventional basins and was pivotal in Scala’s establishing an asset base of ~34,000 acres in the Wolfcamp HZ play.  Jonas found the most satisfaction at Scala with his efforts to build ownership in the execution of Scala’s operations, from the mudloggers at the rig to the landowner who was searching for water resources.  Prior to Scala, Jonas worked for Noble Energy as an explorationist in a number of conventional and unconventional basins in the US and Globally, exposing Noble Energy to opportunities in the Norphlet and Lower Miocene Plays in the Gulf of Mexico, East Texas Basin Unconventional Gas, Onshore UK Unconventional Gas, Onshore Columbia oil, Offshore India and having reviewed numerous other basins as part of the Global New Ventures Team.  Jonas assumed roles of increasing influence at Noble Energy, culminating in his assignment to the Business Development Group as the primary Geologist.  Cogenerated and was a key team member in the execution of the $ 3.9B Rosetta Resources acquisition in 2015.  Jonas most values his efforts at Noble Energy in the development of the Geoscience Staff, service as a co-founder and chairman of the Geologic Steering Committee, and member of the Resource and Risk Evaluation Committee.

Jonas earned his MS-Geology from the University of Texas at San Antonio with a field-based thesis project in the western Delaware Basin, mapping and organizing the stratigraphy between the Woodford and the Wolfcamp in the Sierra Diablo region on the Figure 2 Ranch in Culberson County.  Jonas began his Masters studies at Sul Ross State University in Alpine, Texas, where he fell in love with West Texas and the people who make it their home.  Jonas earned his BS-Geology form Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi with an emphasis on sedimentology while also being active in the ROTC program and earning his commission in the Army.

Jonas and his wife Lisa have been married 19 years and have a young son, Jordan.  They together have built a small farm and enjoy making sausages, cured meats, and preserves.  Jonas enjoys teaching his son the outdoors, hunting and fishing.  Otherwise, he can be found in his shop building old trucks and metalworking.
